St George's

Post 18 Options Programme

Although the vast majority of leavers from St George’s go onto Higher Education, usually to study a university degree before starting work, we do not prioritise or emphasise any single post-18 route.  Increasingly, more girls will look to undertake degree apprenticeships or join companies as school leavers and we fully endorse every girl’s informed decision and support their ambitions. From May 2017 the School will be working closely with Unifrog who provide an excellent resource which helps girls research, choose and apply for a range of post-18 options.

For those looking to go to university a programme runs in our Enrichment time and includes advice on choosing the right university and making the best use of available information.  Following a programme of general advice and information, girls are guided through the UCAS application process by their tutor and the Head of Sixth Form.

We arrange visits to Higher Education Fairs, which offer talks on a variety of topics and provide an opportunity to collect information and prospectuses from universities.  In November 2016 girls attended the City of London Freemen’s School Careers, Education and Gap Convention. It is important that girls can offer universities evidence of extra-curricular activities such as sport, music or Young Enterprise, work experience and development of transferable skills such as team work and leadership.  Pupils are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities as well as undertaking relevant work experience and community service before submitting the UCAS form.

Some courses require extra preparation for example:

Medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science – applicants must undertake extensive work experience.

Education (primary phases) – applicants must undertake a programme of work experience in a state school.

Art – Art College applicants often take a foundation course in art and should discuss their application with the Director of Art, available by clicking here.

Oxbridge – please click here for information about applying to Oxford and Cambridge

Studying abroad – please click here for information about applying to US universities. To apply for other non-UK applications please email the head of Sixth Form.

St George’s has an excellent record of girls achieving places at some of the top universities in the UK including the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, LSE and Durham.  In 2016, our most popular destination was Edinburgh University with 6 girls enrolled in courses. Subjects being read by recent cohorts include:

  • Veterinary Science
  • Economics
  • International Relations
  • Archaeology
  • Civil Engineering
  • Classics
  • Graphic Design
  • History
  • History of Art
  • Fashion

Most years we have girls who continue their study of Fine Art at prestigious art schools such as Central St Martins, go onto study drama or music or study sports science at prestigious universities such as Loughborough.
