GCSE Art (Examination Board: OCR)

During the course the students will learn to understand contexts in Art and Design, develop and explore ideas using media, process and resources in two and three dimensions, including where appropriate, ICT. They will learn to modify and refine work as it progresses and finally present a personal response, realising intentions and showing connections with the work of other artists.

Candidates have to submit a minimum of three pieces of course work supported by preparatory and critical studies . In addition, there is a ten-hour examination. The work is exhibited at the beginning of the Summer Term in the 5th Year and examined internally with visiting moderators.

Art in the Sixth Form (Edexcel Examination Board)

The main purpose of a course in Art and Design is to develop your ability to appreciate and respond to the visual world in a personal and creative way. The skills you will develop will be varied, and determined by the areas of study you choose. The areas of study available to you - in any combination - are: drawing, life-drawing, painting, print-making and sculpture.

There are many careers in Art and Design and at present most students wishing to study further will go on to do a one year "Foundation" course at an art college before applying to degree courses in more specialist areas of Art and Design. You may, however, wish to take an AS- or A-level in Art for its own sake, or you might wish to go into a career where it is useful to have had experience in Art and Design, such as advertising, marketing, architecture, publishing and the media.

For A-level we follow the Edexcel Art syllabus. The course is divided up into six units of assessment. The first three units make up the AS-level and are completed and assessed in the Lower Sixth (year 12). The A2 units are completed and assessed in the Upper Sixth. Workbooks showing research and preparatory studies are produced for each unit.

Which syllabus do we study?  Edexcel Syllabus 8031 (AS) 9031 (A2)
