GEOGRAPHY

Head of Department: Mrs A King

Geography in the 1st - 3rd years

All girls have three periods of Geography each week, taught in tutor groups.

We enable the girls to develop a sound grounding in all aspects of geography, to acquire new skills and to learn how to argue, justify and consider others' opinions.  Students engage in active and dynamic learning with varied activities which supportively stretch all abilities.  The topics covered include:

1st Year:

Mapping, settlement, shopping, exploring Britain, rivers and floods, earthquakes and volcanoes, and sport.

2nd Year:

Coasts, Brazil, weather and climate, ecosystems, resources and energy and crime.

3rd Year:

Spain, development, economic activity in the UK, fashion, global trade, environmental issues and tourism.

GCSE (AQA Examinations Board)

The course prepares girls for the Geography Syllabus A examinations. There are two written papers, which together contribute 75% of the final grade. The remaining 25% of the grade depends on coursework, which takes the form of a fieldwork investigation. All girls are normally entered for the higher tier papers.

Paper I:

Geographical Skills and Physical Geography, including rivers, coasts and glaciation.

Paper II:

Population, settlement, agriculture, managing resources and tourism. Case studies will be taken from the developed and developing world, e.g. UK, EU, Brazil, Egypt.

A range of skills is acquired throughout the course, e.g. map-reading skills, graphical skills, interpreting aerial and satellite photographs and weather maps. In the Summer Term there is a five-day residential field course in preparation for the Geography fieldwork investigation. This usually takes place at Slapton in Devon. Various methods of data collection are learnt on the course, and the final fieldwork project is an excellent way of learning how to collect, record and analyse data, and make use of IT skills.

The course encourages a sympathetic understanding of different communities and cultures within our own society and elsewhere in the world. It is also hoped that pupils will develop a sensitive awareness of the environment.
