Boarding FAQs

Where will I live?

All the boarders at St George's live in Year Groups - this means that all the First Years live together in one area under the care of the Markham Housemistress, Mrs Hetherington.

You will share a dorm with several other girls and you may, within the limits set by your Housemistress, decorate the poster boards in your room. Your Housemistress is not the only person who looks after you. There are also Resident Tutors who assist the Housemistress and between them they will help you to find your way around, check that you have done your prep, support you in your competitions, make sure that you know what the rules are, among many other things.

Where will I eat?

All meals are taken in the Dining Room - including break and tea. In the evenings you are allowed tuck - and there is always fruit available for you.

Will I be able to speak to my family?

We think it is really important for you to be able to contact your family and friends.
There is a telephone (call box) in your area, there are computers in the common rooms and the school computer rooms are open until 9.00pm every night so that you can send and receive e-mails.

Any girl with a personal laptop can also connect wirelessly through our network onto the internet for e-mail, Skype and other forms of electronic communication.

Most girls also have a mobile phone which Mrs Hetherington looks after during the school day.

Where can I spend my free time?

The lower school girls share a common room in the boarding area. This room is for you to use in the evening - to play games, read, watch the television (and DVDs), chat to your friends - even do some work if you want to.  There are also two computers with Internet access available.

How often am I allowed to go out?

It's possible to go out on lots of weekends during the term. However, there are some weekends when everyone stays in, so that they can get to know each other better. These are called Resident Weekends and you will find more information on the page called Weekends and Exeats.
