Lower School 1st-3rd years, ages 11-13
In the first three years all girls follow a broad and balanced course of study. There is ample opportunity to develop their academic, artistic and sporting abilities.
GCSE ages 14-16
GCSE examinations are taken at the end of the 5th year, when girls are 15-16 years old (ie the equivalent of years 10 and 11). Most girls take ten or eleven subjects at GCSE. Everyone takes English and English Literature, Mathematics, Science (either Core and Additional, or three single Sciences), a modern foreign language (French or Spanish) and a humanity (Geography, History or Religious Studies). All girls also take Business & Communications Systems.
Sixth Form Curriculum
Girls usually take four AS subjects in Lower Sixth but some take five subjects - particularly if thinking of applying to Oxford / Cambridge or to highly competitive universities such as Edinburgh or LSE, or for Medicine, Veterinary Medicine or Law.
In Upper Sixth most girls take three A2 subjects to complete the A-level qualification but for some universities and courses four A-levels may be advisable.
Learning Skills
As a small school, St George's aims to assist each girl with her individual learning progress and offer enrichment to the more able as well as supporting those who need additional help.
The school tests each girl on entry to assess her strengths and weaknesses, and tutors liaise with colleagues and parents to keep a constant eye on progress. Every girl has the opportunity to improve her learning by the acquisition of study skills at an appropriate level and is given specific help in planning essays, taking notes and effective revision.
If staff recommend an educational assessment, the school can arrange for girls who are found to have learning difficulties to have a weekly support lesson through the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre which sends specialist teachers to the school. Girls can also be given individual help in organisational skills or strategies for focused learning if needed.
The school expects to establish an Individual Learning Profile for each girl which will highlight her capabilities and needs.
