The Chapel Choir had the privilege of being invited to sing at Westminster Abbey as part of the celebrations for their 25th Anniversary Year. The choir led Evensong for a packed congregation and finished the service with the second performance of Howard Goodall’s “Oh be Joyful” which was commissioned for the choir. We were so pleased to see so many parents at the Abbey, many of whom joined the choir for a wonderful meal to celebrate the occasion.

GCSE Drama Performances

Congratulations to the GCSE Drama classes who performed their final GCSE Drama examination pieces on 26 April. The pieces were devised by the girls, using a set play as the inspiration. In “The Void” the life stories of 4 people are explored when they are trapped in the void between heaven and hell. In order to move on into the afterlife the 4 characters must choose their happiest and most important memory, so that it can be recorded and they can live it for eternity. In contrast, “The Streets” followed the lives of 4 prostitutes who lived together and the aftermath of one of their murders. Both plays explored complex and challenging issues and used powerful devices to support the story.

Essex Castles

On Wednesday 25 April the intrepid First Years ventured out into the monsoon rains for a trip back in time to the medieval period. The warm dry bus took them to Essex, first to Mountfitchet, a Norman Motte and Bailey castle that has been reconstructed as it would have been in the 1100’s, including animals such as deer and chickens, the church, the crook houses and the hall, as well as the palisade walls and trebuchets. The First Years enjoyed the way the past was bought to life, including the grizzly sight of a hanged man in the centre of the village and the defensive features of the castles, very similar to some of the models they made back in the Autumn Term. After a soggy hour they got back on the bus and went to Hedingham castle, a Square Keep castle. Activities here included brass rubbings and a tour of the castle; imagining the medieval people and their lives from 900 years before, including the siege by King John and the banquets that would have been held there. The medieval loos were a particular highlight! They arrived back at school, soggy but with a greater understanding of the lives of the people and they have been studying this year. Many thanks to Mrs Potter, Miss Jackson and Rev. Sistig.

On Monday 30 April the Fifth Year went to the Palace of Westminster, or the Houses of Parliament, as it is also known, where we had a guided tour of the House of Commons. We spent an amazing time walking around the building, as the architecture inside was very impressive with its statues of key members of Parliament and giant paintings, showing key moments in history. We also had the opportunity to meet Adam Afriyie, who is the MP for Windsor, and to listen his interesting talk on reasons for going into politics. He was very enthusiastic and so we were all engaged in what he was saying. This trip fascinated our year group so much that now we are planning to come back to observe Prime Minister’s Question Time.
