Boarding - Frequently Asked Questions

Where will I live?

All the boarders in 1st - 4th Years live in Markham under the care of the House Mistress, Mrs Hetherington, and her team of Resident Tutors.  They will help you settle in when you first arrive and look after you in the evenings and weekends.  They will guide you throughout the year and help you decide which clubs to join and which events to sign up for.

Where will I eat?

All meals are taken in the Dining Room - including break and tea.  In the evenings you are allowed tuck - and there is always fruit available for you.

Will I be able to speak to my family?

We think it is really important for you to be able to contact your family and friends.
There is a telephone (call box) in your area, there are computers in the lower & middle school common rooms and the school computer rooms are open until 9.00pm every night so that you can send and receive e-mails.
Any girl with a personal laptop can also connect wirelessly through our network onto the internet for e-mail, Skype and other forms of electronic communication.
Most girls also have a mobile phone which Mrs Hetherington looks after during the school day.

Where can I spend my free time?

The First and Second years share a common room in the boarding area. This room is for you to use in the evening - to play games, read, watch the television (and DVDs), chat to your friends - even do some work if you want to.  There are also two computers with InterNet access available.

How often am I allowed to go out?

It is possible to go out on lots of weekends during the term and there are four Residents' Weekends each term when all the boarders stay in school for a special programme of outings.  Boarders may also choose one weekend per term (two in the Autumn Term) to go home a night earler than usual.  This is called a 'Family Friendly Friday' and is useful if your family has a birthday or something to celebrate over a particular weekend.. However, there are some weekends when everyone stays in, so that they can get to know each other better. You will find more information on the page called "Weekends and Exeats".
