Frequently Asked Questions
What do 11+ assessments look like?
Our assessment for entry to St George’s is held at the end of November. Candidates sit a combined Maths and English paper (one hour) as well as an online CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) test consisting of Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning (1 hour). The CEM test is designed to evaluate potential rather than knowledge and so no preparation is required.
During the day, all pupils are usually interviewed (in pairs) by the Head, or one of the Deputy Heads. Each will be asked to think about a topic for conversation to act as an icebreaker for an informal discussion. Some children may choose to bring a small prop (photograph, book, medal, souvenir or artefact) to aid them.
Finally, we will ask for a reference from your son or daughter’s current school. We won't just consider their academic profile but their all round potential and so this reference forms an important part of the process.
Is there a specific pass mark?
We review each pupil's application on an individual basis and put equal weighting on the different components of the assessment day, alongside the reports and references. We appreciate that pupils come from different academic environments and we are looking for pupils with the right attitude and aptitude to contribute fully to all St George's has to offer, rather than a specific set of scores.
Are practice papers available?
We do not provide practice papers. The papers are modelled on national curriculum content, appropriate for a pupil aged at that entry point. For the CEM test, CEM provide an example on their website, or we would recommend any good verbal/non verbal reasoning book or online app to give a feel for the sort of questions asked.
Can we apply after the deadline?
Yes. While we encourage families to apply by the published deadline where possible, we understand that circumstances can change and late applications may occasionally be considered, subject to availability. Please contact our Admissions Team to discuss your individual circumstances and the next steps.
Can pupils join St George’s mid-year?
Occasionally places may become available outside the usual entry points depending on year group availability. Families are encouraged to contact Admissions directly to discuss opportunities.
What ages do pupils join St George’s Ascot?
Pupils typically join St George’s at 11+ (Year 7), 13+ (Year 9) and 16+ (Lower Sixth), with places available for both day and boarding pupils across all year groups depending on availability. From September 2027 boys, together with girls, will be welcomed to the school into Year 7 and 9. This is the start of our phased move towards a co-educational future. Click here to find out more.
