This Spring Term saw the launch of an exciting new co-curricular club at St George’s, 'SGAFS', the St George’s Ascot Feminist Society. The club is run by Ms Conde, who is studying a PhD related to gender and international politics alongside her role as Markham Assistant Housemistress and has created SGAFS as a forum for students to talk about what it means to be a female and a feminist in today's society.

The club provides an opportunity for members to discuss historic and current issues relating to gender - from domestic violence to period poverty - with the aim of raising awareness and helping women in the local community and beyond. By providing a space for open discussion, SGAFS is all about empowering its members to have the confidence to speak out about what matters to them. Meetings will be varied, not only including topics to learn about and discuss, but also fundraising sessions and hearing from visiting speakers. Due to the growing interest in the club, SGAFS has also introduced the opportunity for girls to be ‘affiliated members’, meaning that those that are unable to attend meetings due to other commitments can still be part of the club and help with fundraising.

The girls brainstormed about fundraising earlier in the term and came up with their first big project, St George’s first ever International Women’s Day Card Competition. All our pupils have been invited to design a card inspired by International Women’s Day , and the winning design will be printed onto cards which can be purchased to raise funds for Berkshire Women’s Aid, a local charity that provides support for victims of domestic abuse. The idea is that our school community can write the card to an inspiring female in their life to show their appreciation for them, then deliver them on International Women's Day on Tuesday, 8 March.
