St George’s last week held the official opening of its new Music Technology Room and Recording Studio, which has been created to support pupils with both curriculum and co-curricular music lessons.  This new facility supplements the school’s already comprehensive music school, and technology provision, delivering access to cutting edge recording and computer technology. This will enable pupils to develop their full potential as creative musicians and will equip them with essential knowledge for a potential career in a studio-music environment.

The room has been named The Hillier Room, after Director of Music, Mr Ian Hiller who this year celebrates 40 years teaching at St George’s, and 29 years as Director of Music. His goal has always been ‘that music should be an area of school life that anyone could be part of and that everyone could enjoy’ and the new technology room aims to also open music up to everyone.

Liz Hewer, Head comments “According to the UN, ‘a persistent gender gap in digital access keeps women from unlocking technology’s full potential’. As a school, our goal is to counter this by fully integrating technology and learning innovation into pupils’ educational and co-curricular experiences to ensure they not only achieve technology’s full potential, but also their own. The new Music Technology suite builds on our already extensive use of technology throughout the school, including Google for Education, proven by our Google Reference School status, and we hope it opens up a new world of music to our pupils.”
