Meet our Sixth Form

I love [the Lower Sixth Form] more than any other year I have been in. The Sixth Form experience has really given me the chance to excel in the areas of school life I enjoy. I get to do the subjects that I love, I get to practise my favourite sports and I get to help out in School which I really enjoy.

To help you get to know our Sixth Form better, we recently interviewed four of our SGA Sixth Form pupils to hear, first hand, what makes the Sixth Form years so special at St George's.

Malak

"I am Malak and I joined St George's in Year 10. I am currently in the Upper Sixth studying my A Levels which are Business, History of Art and Photography.

Since starting Sixth Form I am enjoying the independence we get, I am also enjoying the new role I got which is Deputy Head of Boarding. This is such an important role to me as I am a tailored border. As a border I wanted to help out in making the boarding house provide a homey feeling for everyone, especially for those who are full borders cause I know it could be hard sometimes being away from family for long periods.

In Sixth Form it's very easy to be able to communicate with teachers, and easily raise opinions and solutions for any problems which we do during our Sixth Form council meetings. I am preparing to go on to university to study either Fashion Marketing or Interior Design after life at SGA.

I am particularly enjoying working on my EPQ, especially as my artefact includes my culture and fashion at the same time. Alongside studying I do lots extra curriculars such as Tennis, Netball and PT and I am also a Sports Leader so I get to help out with some of the younger years fixtures and training which helps connect Sixth Formers with other pupils lower down the school. My advice to any newcomers for Sixth Form would be that you will always feel like you are part of a family, and that you get to have such a loving, understanding, and enthusiastic Head of Year that has a goal to make your Sixth Form experience the best it can be."

"I joined St George’s in the Upper Sixth and I am studying Geography, Maths and Economics for A Level.

One of my favourite things about Sixth Form here is the freedom we have. We have several study periods during the week, and we are fully responsible for choosing what to do during those times. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t have support from the teachers - it is actually the opposite. They are always there for us, and also provide valuable guidance and advice. It’s like the best of both worlds: having the flexibility to do what you think suits you the most, while still having great teachers ready to help whenever you need it.

In Sixth Form we are introduced to many different post-18 choices, and the school also emphasises that we will be supported no matter what our choice is. This is really important for me, as it means that I feel free to explore and choose to follow the path that suits me the best, knowing that my choice will be respected and assisted by all the teachers and staff. Boarding in Sixth Form for me is a very special experience. The staff and other boarders make me feel like this is my second home.

If you’re considering SGA Sixth Form, I recommend visiting in person, or at least look at the virtual tour and videos of the school. It is really important to see whether SGA is the right place for you. I was hesitant until I visited the school and decided right after that SGA was the school for me."

"I joined St George’s in Year 9 and I am currently studying Biology, Chemistry, and Art.

I was nervous to transition from Year 11 to Sixth Form because of the added workload but I have learnt to manage my time and make the most out of my day by doing the subjects that I love. At St George’s you are able to participate in a variety of extra curricular activities. I most enjoy being a part of Model United Nations (MUN) as it is so different from my A Level subjects and allows me to have a deeper understanding of current affairs and conflicts around the world. I enjoy being able to be informed about the world around me and this has prepared me for life after St George’s.

As St George’s is such a small and tight knit school I feel as though I am able to get to know my peers on a much better level, making it easier to make new friends for anyone who is thinking of joining. All of the teachers at St George’s are also extremely welcoming and will help you with anything you may need."

Molly

"I joined St George’s in Year 9 and I am currently studying Psychology, Politics and Business.

I am most enjoying the fact I am able to learn the subjects that I am most interested in, which gives me the chance to do the very best in the areas of school that I enjoy the most. There have been many extracurricular activities that have helped me give a better insight into jobs I may be interested in doing later in the future. Most recently this year we have also had many enrichment talks on different Universities and Apprenticeship courses led by teachers, alumnae and those that have taken these certain pathways. This has really helped me to find the right course that will give me the best opportunity.

Personally I find the sport clubs at St Georges very enjoyable. There are a range of sports available, but netball and lacrosse stand out the most to me as I have played them the longest and I enjoy being part of the teams and taking part in matches.

As a full boarder, I feel that boarding gives you the right amount of independence in preparation for university. There is also a great environment in boarding with a supportive and friendly community. If someone was to consider joining the Sixth Form at St George’s, I would say that it's important to do the subjects that you love and find the most interesting. We have small year groups which allows for more one-to- one with teachers which I find very helpful. I would also recommend getting involved in as much as you can, to ensure you take all opportunities possible."
